Novatrices, les créations de la Compagnie Urban Tap puisent à diverses cultures et formes artistiques : traditions ancestrales et nouvelles technologies, animisme et cultures urbaines,  musique jazz et rythmes envoûtants, claquettes et danses hip hop, scénographies multimédia, veejaying… Il en résulte des spectacles vivifiants et pleins d’humanité qui touchent un large public, bien au-delà des distinctions d’âges et d’appartenances culturelles.

Urban Tap est né au sein de la scène underground newyorkaise des années 90 d’une jam session hebdomadaire réunissant, autour du danseur de claquette Tamangoh, des artistes d’horizons et de cultures très divers partageant  la même passion pour l’improvisation et le langage universel du rythme. Après s’être longtemps produit dans les clubs underground de New York, la compagnie Urban Tap est invitée en 1999 à créer le spectacle  Caravane  au Théâtre de la Kitchen. A la croisée du happening, du spectacle de danse, du concert et de la performance vidéo,  Caravane  conquiert  public et critique (« Un des dix meilleurs spectacles de l’année” selon le New York Times) et propulse la Compagnie sur le devant de la scène aux Etats-Unis.

La troupe s’est depuis produite sur de nombreuses scènes internationales, notamment : au New Victory Theatre à Broadway, au Joyce Theatre à New York, au festival de Jazz de Montréal, au Monaco Dance Forum, au festival Steps en Suisse, au Holland Dance Festival, au Altstadtherbst Kulturfestival de Düsseldorf, au festival de danse d’Athènes, au festival Altre Danze de Venise, au festival Earth Celebration sur l’île de Sado au Japon, au festival Summerstage de Central Park à New York, au Kennedy Center à Washington, au Wexner Center à Colombus, au Musée d’art contemporain de Chicago, au Kimmel Center de Philadelphie, au Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival et en France, à Jazz in Marciac, au festival Jazz à Vienne, au festival Vaison Danses, à l’Auditorium de Lyon, au grand théâtre du Volcan Scène nationale du Havre, à l’Agora d’Evry, à l’Hippodrome de Douai et au Carré des Jalles à Saint-Médard-en-Jalles.

Avec les spectacles Kadansé (2003), Bay Mo Dilo (2007) Narcisse & Co (2009) et  Marassa (2011), la Compagnie Urban Tap entreprend un travail d’écriture multimédia et de mise en scène.  Cette évolution vers des formes plus fixées signe une nouvelle étape dans le parcours de la compagnie. Le  happening improvisé qui était la “marque de fabrique” d’Urban Tap jusque-là continue néanmoins d’être présenté à ce jour avec, entre autres, des spectacles comme New-York Revue créé en 2010. En 2017 début de création du spectacle Congé Square et en 2018 création du spectacle 3 Rivières.
